BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2006 Highly Commended

Deze foto is in februari 2006 gemaakt in Brazilie bij de Iguazu watervallen.

Met deze foto heb ik bij de BBC Photographer of the Year competion een derde prijs gewonnen(highly commended) in de cathegorie ''Wild Places"'.

Deze fotowedstrijd is wereldwijd de belangrijkste natuur fotowedstrijd .Dit jaar waren er 18000 inzendingen.Omdat het vooral een engelstalig gebeuren is,er komt een boek uit,het BBC wildlife magazin is in het engels,heb ik mijn website in het engels vertaald.

Van november 2006 tot mei 2007 is er een expositie van de winnende foto's in het Museon in Den Haag.

This picture was made februari 2006 in Brazil

The glare off the water on a hot February day made it difficult to photograph these spectacular falls on the border of Brazil and Argentina. But then the weather suddenly changed – ‘lots of wind and a gloriously inky sky preceding rain. With such a contrast between sky and water, ’ says Jan, ‘you could at last begin to appreciate the scale and wildness of the place. The thunderous roar was deafening.’ After an hour of dramatic thunderstorm , ‘the sky cleared and the oppressive heat returned,’ he adds. These falls have spray that, in the right conditions, can reach heights of 90m (300 feet) as the river plunges into the chasm known as the Devil’s Throat. Iguaçu comes from an Indian word meaning ‘great water’, and today these 2.5km- (1.6-mile) wide falls have been honoured with UNESCO World Heritage status.

Dutch Light

On this site I would like to show you some of my pictures .
In Holland light and weather can be rather unsettled and I would like to catch that magic light
Usually that's early in the morning or just before sunset.
I live on Goeree,an island near the coast in the Rhine delta
Many birds can be spotted in this area
and I tried to observe some of there behaviour.
Long lenses are needed. I use the Nikon D2x camera , for the landscapes the 12-24 mm lense and for the birds a 200-400 mm nikon lense and a 600 mm nikon lense.

Sandwich terns

The Sandwich tern is a tern living in the coastal region,you can see them the whole summer,they bread on little islands near Goeree

Spoonbills in the morning

This is a colony of Spoonbills living in the dunes on an island near Goedereede,the pictures were taken early in the morning

Goedereede at Christmas

Goedereede is a small town with many old buildings,it has a harbour in the centre,but it is not possible anymore to enter the harbour by boat.

Goedereede is an old place,it was built in the Middle Ages and had an harbour to sea

The Roman Road

This picture was taken on the Roman Road,a very old road,possibly from the period that the Ancient Romans lived on our island Goeree.

The bird is the Black tailed Godwit,this bird breeds on Goeree

The sun did come up,when I did take this picture from a fishing boat at the Grevelingen,an inlet of the North sea south of Goeree.

The sundown after the rain

It rained the entire day,but just before the sun disappeared, it was shining on the surface of the sea for some minutes

Greylag Goose in the mist

Greylag geese breed on Goeree,they can be spotted the entire year,but in this morning mist they look very special

This is an ordinary cow with two calves in the dunes on Goeree
The picture was taken early in the morning, in the magic light they look very special.
